Eugene is always willing to go the extra mile to help someone. If someone needs to be pulled out of the mud or needs a toilet put in, he will go do it. He has the most positive attitude of anyone I’ve ever met. Always willing to help out a neighbor or a stranger. This man truly deserves a tank full of gas for all the ones he’s burned helping others.

Tre is my neighbor, and every time it snowed this winter he was here very early in the morning, often before 6:00 A M, to blow out my driveway. I am a widow and was sick for much of that time, needing to go to town for doctor appointments. He did not know that, he just did it out of kindness. When I sent him a check as a token of thanks, he returned it, saying his service was a gift. Please honor him with Tanks of Thanks.

I would like to nominate Karen for “Tanks of Thanks” for all that she does with Make-A-Wish. Karen is a wish granter, she goes to homes to do the paper work and follow ups for Make-A-Wish. This is all volunteer and takes a lot of hours for each family. It takes a special person to go into someones home that has a child with a life-threatening illness. Karen does this without any pay for her time (or gas!)

She brings in treats for the kids and spends time listening to them read, talk about their day or share stories about her travels with a whole class. She genuinely loves every child and helps the teachers in any way she can. Every teacher states they don’t know what they would do without Mary Lou.

Mary is eighty-two years old and has volunteered continually for most of her life in various ways. She currently volunteers at the Ark day care center in the baby room several days each week. In her spare time Mary knits baby caps for Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, sews walker bags and bibs for the folks at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. Her ninety-one year old husband, Ray, delivers mail daily to the people at the retirement village who are unable to get their mail because of their physical conditions. Both Ray and Mary volunteer year around regardless of the weather.

Mark and his wife Elva were recently nominated for citizens of the year in Herington. For the second year in a row they are providing lunches for children in the summer. They recently got some state school funding and anyone from 0 to 18 can eat free lunch Monday-Friday, until school starts. It is held at the Christian Church and centrally located so the children can walk to it. This helps over the 75% of children who are at poverty level in Herington.

Gabi is a dedicated person who works tirelessly at the Richland Wilkin County Humane Society in Wahpeton. She drives to and from the shelter at lease two to three times a day to check on the animals. She does this every day of the week all year around. She also promotes fund raiser’s and other activities to fund the animal’s care at the Humane Society. She uses her car to go get items needed for the shelter. It would be wonderful for her to receive Tanks of Thanks.

When we were pregnant with twins, my husband had some light seizures which ended up being caused by a cancerous brain tumor. Maggie called us and said she would like to bring us food every Wednesday evening, she felt that it was her calling. We knew of Maggie because she had owned a lunch restaurant in town but had closed for retirement last year. Her amazing, homegrown food is known far and wide, and here she was blessing us with it. It has been nearly ten months now, and she still brings us, and many others food every Wednesday. We have learned that when she hears of someone with cancer or an illness in the area, she calls and delivers meals to them as well, although she would never tell anyone that. She drives at least fifty miles every Wednesday and serves many, many families with her gift, free of charge and always delicious.

I am nominating Emmy Bonds for your Tanks of Thanks program because she is an outstanding teacher.

I am nominating Emmy Bonds for your Tanks of Thanks program because she is an outstanding teacher. My son, Nickolas, is in Mrs. Bond’s second grade class at West Ridge Elementary. It has been a tough year for Nickolas as we have been transitioning as a family after a divorce. In particular, Nickolas was struggling in school. He is a smart, fun boy, but was sad and had no interest in learning. Mrs. Bonds very easily could have given up on Nickolas and written him off as a “behavior kid”. Instead, she has gone out of her way to find ways to connect with Nickolas and earn his trust. She dedicated her time to communicate with me and try different techniques to help him reach his potential. There were definite moments of frustration this year in Nickolas’ schooling, but I applaud Mrs. Bond’s hard work and dedication. He is now flourishing and loves going to school. He’s having fun and is motivated to complete his work. When I think of how different this year could have turned out for Nickolas, I am just so grateful to Mrs. Bonds for being a truly great teacher. I would like to share my gratitude with her with the help of Tanks of Thanks. Mrs. Bonds not only deserves this recognition, but it would help with the costs she incurs during her 80-mile round trip daily commute to school.
